To boost student motivation and make learning more dynamic, many schools are embracing interactive digital resources. Starting in the 2024/25 academic year, Lutheran Tsang Shing Siu Leun School in Tuen Mun has introduced CoComelon English—a playful, multimedia programme designed for early primary students. This innovative approach moves beyond traditional textbooks and repetitive drills, offering a lively, immersive way to learn English.
As the second-most-subscribed YouTube channel globally, CoComelon is a household name, with its English nursery rhymes surpassing 60 billion views. Its cheerful star, JJ, is instantly recognisable to young learners. Principal Ip Luk Ying explains that the school adopted CoComelon to make English lessons more engaging and effective. Unlike conventional methods centred on textbooks and worksheets, the programme uses colourful 3D animation, catchy songs, and relatable characters to instantly draw students in. This method not only sustains their focus but also strengthens listening, speaking, reading, and writing skills organically.

Interactive Teaching Materials Foster Immersive Learning Experiences
Principal Ip candidly acknowledges the struggles local students face with English acquisition: waning motivation, perceived dullness of lessons, and an overall sense of burden. The conventional approach—reliant on rote memorisation and mechanical drills—has left students with shaky pronunciation fundamentals, inadequate reading practice, and few chances to use English authentically. ‘Many become hesitant to speak,’ she observes, ‘self-conscious about their accents and skills, which creates a cycle of stalled progress and diminishing enthusiasm.’
The introduction of CoComelon’s interactive resources has marked a turning point. ‘The moment CoComelon CoComelon’s s songs and videos play, the classroom energises—you can see the students’ engagement instantly transform,’ Principal Ip notes. Beyond digital content, the programme has physically transformed the school environment through resources like the visiting CoComelon Learning Bus, cultivating what she describes as ‘an organic English immersion space where learning happens naturally through joy and participation.’
A key strength lies in the materials’ continuity. The recurring character JJ—familiar to students from their preschool years—creates a unique bond. ‘Students don't just learn English through JJ; they feel JJ is growing alongside them, almost like a classmate,’ Principal Ip explains. This emotional connection, she emphasises, builds the kind of personal investment that traditional methods often fail to achieve.

Versatile Teaching Resources That Make Curriculum Alignment Easy
CoComelon’s teaching resources provide a vibrant collection of thematic materials covering everyday topics like daily routines, numbers, colours, and animals. These ready-to-use digital tools offer teachers significantly more flexibility compared to traditional textbooks with their fixed content and repetitive exercises. Where conventional materials often require educators to spend hours creating supplemental aids, CoComelon’s rich eResources enable teachers to effortlessly design varied, interactive lessons that directly support their instructional goals.
In practice, teachers develop engaging thematic units centred around CoComelon videos, seamlessly incorporating new vocabulary and grammatical structures into their lessons. Students then deepen their understanding through complementary activities like creative writing assignments, classroom presentations, and themed picture book reading. This multi-dimensional approach allows learners to naturally develop accurate pronunciation, cultivate an intuitive grasp of the language, and practise authentic conversation skills. The results speak for themselves as Principal Ip observes a remarkable transformation in our students’ confidence. Where many once hesitated to speak English in class, now they are seen participating actively and expressing themselves with growing fluency.

Online Teaching Materials Achieve Personalised Learning
CoComelon's extensive teaching resources allow teachers to prepare lessons quickly, enabling them to focus more on refining their teaching methods and addressing individual student needs. This helps teachers identify learning challenges, such as correcting pronunciation and language usage. Students can also personalise their learning by repeatedly listening to English songs and watching videos online at their own pace and according to their interests. This approach meets diverse learning needs and enhances outcomes, fostering a more personalised learning experience.
On top of that, CoComelon offers free online resources for parents, empowering them to practice English with their children anytime, anywhere. Principal Ip encourages parents to actively engage in their children’s learning by establishing habits like reading English books together and exploring online English learning platforms. This multi-faceted approach helps maintain students’ enthusiasm for learning English and contributes to significant improvements in their language skills.
