Building a positive family environment can give children the motivation to face challenges confidently. However, many parents struggle to create this positivity or even do not know how to start meaningful conversations with their children. To help parents navigate this journey, EdCity hosted a seminar titled ‘Parent Talk: Guiding Your Family Towards Positivity’ on 15 February (Saturday). The event featured two speakers: Mr Eugene Fong Yick Jin, Chairman of the Committee on Home-School Co-operation, and Dr Li Chiu Fai, Assistant Principal of Cognitio College (Kowloon) and a member of the Hong Kong Association for Computer Education. They shared practical strategies for building a positive family atmosphere and explored how artificial intelligence (AI) can enhance parent-child relationships.
Tips from Mr Eugene Fong Yick Jin
Mr Fong, a father of three, shared his personal parenting experiences and offered advice on fostering communication with children. He highlighted simple yet meaningful actions such as:
- Writing letters to his children to express thoughts and emotions.
- Scheduling one-on-one time, like having breakfast together, to build stronger bonds.
- Sharing personal stories about his own school and work experiences to create conversation topics.
During the discussion, Mr Fong emphasised the importance of understanding each child’s personality. He suggested parents use tools like the MBTI personality test to better understand their children’s traits and adapt their communication styles accordingly. He encouraged parents to stay calm and show good communication skills, helping children learn how to handle emotions and build healthy relationships.
Insights from Dr Li Chiu Fai
Dr Li introduced several popular AI tools, including ChatGPT, POE, and DeepSeek, which can support both educational and family needs. He explained how these tools go beyond helping students with self-learning—they can also be used to resolve family conflicts. For example, Dr Li shared an example of asking an AI tool: ‘What should I do if I upset my wife, and she refuses to cook dinner?’ Although the answers were straightforward, involving children in these problem-solving activities can help strengthen teamwork and improve communication within the family.
Dr Li also encouraged parents to use AI creatively with their children. For instance:
- Collaborate on planning trips using AI tools.
- Explore new topics of interest together to spark curiosity.
- Use AI to generate conversation topics or solve problems, increasing opportunities for bonding.
