Starting Next Semester: Experts and Parents Share Tips on Study and School Admission Strategies

As the new semester begins, primary school students will start preparing for their internal assessments, while secondary school students will gear up for the Diploma of Secondary Education (DSE) exams. Parents often feel anxious about their children’s academic performance when they are moving to a higher level of education. To support parents in guiding their children, EdCity hosted a seminar titled ‘Parents Webinar: Positive Education+Revision Strategies (For Further Studies)’ on 14 January. The event featured admission expert Mr Anselm Tong Ting Kin and parenting columnist Ms Yvonne Wong, who shared practical strategies and techniques to help parents and children face academic challenges positively and achieve their educational goals.

Mr Tong, a Former Vice-Principal, Bishop Hall Jubilee School; Former Assistant Principal, Heep Yunn School, introduced his ‘Two-Step Study Approach’: building a solid foundation of knowledge and applying higher-order thinking skills. He encouraged students to develop daily habits of preparing and reviewing lessons, creating study plans and writing reflections can help reinforce their understanding and build a strong foundation for advanced learning. He also shared practical study strategies, such as systematically summarising mistakes, analysing the reasons behind errors, and tracking changes in test scores to identify trends.

On the other hand, Ms Yvonne Wong, a mother of two, shared her insights from a parent’s perspective. She suggested using technology and resources to help children prepare for exams. For example, she recommended leveraging online search tools to find question banks and practice papers, using artificial intelligence (AI) to generate questions, and joining parent groups to access additional resources. She also shared tips for using AI effectively and advised comparing multiple tools to identify the best fit.

In addition, Ms Wong offered practical advice to help children prepare for secondary school interviews. She highlighted the importance of researching target schools, making a good impression, understanding the interview format and questions, preparing extra materials for last-minute admission opportunities, and planning the journey in advance to reduce stress on the interview day. She reassured parents that the more children practice, the more confident they will become and the better they will perform.
