Secondary School Student Wins Four Awards and Claims Top Prize with AI-Powered Medical Screening Solution
The Hong Kong ICT Awards aims at recognising and promoting outstanding information and communications technology (ICT) inventions and applications, thereby encouraging innovation and excellence among Hong Kong's ICT talent and enterprises in their constant pursuit of creative and better solutions to meet business and social needs.
To deepen students' knowledge and skills in innovative technology, EdCity serves as the leading organiser of the annual Hong Kong ICT Awards Student Innovation Award each year. This year, the competition began in July, featuring multiple online and in-person training workshops hosted by EdCity. The response was enthusiastic, with approximately 400 proposals submitted.
The awards presentation ceremony for the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2024 was held on 22 November The 'Student Innovation Grand Award' went to a high school senior for the first time ever, breaking with tradition. Clarisse Poon from St. Paul's Co-educational College received an impressive four awards for her project, 'Medisafe': Student Innovation (Junior Secondary) Gold Award, the Student Innovation Best Use of AI Award, the Student Innovation Grand Award 2024, and the Hong Kong ICT Awards 2024: Special Recognition Award.
Additionally, the 'Magic App' developed by the team from HKFYG Lee Shau Kee Primary School and the 'A-EYE AI visual impaired shopping assistant' by Ken Mochizuki from ELCHK Lutheran Secondary School both secured Gold Awards in the primary and senior secondary categories, respectively. The Gold Award in the higher education category was awarded to the team from the Hong Kong Institute of Information Technology, Institute of Vocational Education (Sha Tin), for their project 'AudioSense'. Notably, all three projects are designed to assist individuals with audio or visual impairments using AI technology. It highlights the younger generation's dedication to leveraging technology to serve the community.
Mr Ken Ngai Yuen Keung, Executive Director of EdCity noted that this year's competition entries are highly practical, showcasing significant progress in advancing technology education.
Dr Hubert Chan Chung Yee, JP, Chairman of the Judging Panel, praised the participants for surpassing the standards of previous years and effectively harnessing creativity to address societal needs.
